The Man Cave Blog

The Man Cave Blog has been publishing about basements, garages and spare rooms since 2013. It is about the practical end of the subject: what fits, what it costs, what people get wrong, and what actually makes a room somebody wants to sit in.

Who runs it

The blog was started by a different owner and ran for several years before going quiet. It changed hands and is now published by a new team, and everything on the site today has been written fresh under that ownership. The subjects the original blog covered are still the subjects here, because they are the right ones, but the writing is not carried over.

We are not contractors, designers or licensed trades. When something on this site needs one, we say so, and the advice here is not a substitute for someone who is qualified to look at your actual room.

How we write

Every guide starts from the constraint rather than the inspiration. Ceiling height, clearance, moisture, power and budget are what decide whether a project works, and they are the details most man cave articles leave out. If a page tells you ten ideas without telling you what any of them need, it has not been much use to you.

We will tell you when something is a bigger job than it looks, and when the cheap version is genuinely fine.

About the images

The photographs on this site are illustrations, not real rooms. They are generated rather than photographed, and none of them shows a build we visited, owned or worked on. We use them because they show an idea clearly and because we would rather do that than present someone else's photograph as our own.

Getting in touch

Corrections are welcome, particularly on anything technical. If we have a detail wrong we would rather know. The contact page reaches us directly.
